How To Buy Sheds | Building Materials
Shed Building Materials
Your buildings usage will also help you determine the type of building you need. If you need a lot of head room, a building with a barn roof may be to your liking. Otherwise, a cottage style roof may meet your needs best. If the room is to be used for heavy work, a building with heavier construction may be in order.
Siding materials
There are many materials used in shed building. Wood looks good, but there are a few problems. By nature, wood alternately absorbs, and expires water. Wood in very arid climates is almost permanent, but in average humidity, it tends to degrade. Moisture in wood allows for the growth of fungus, and causes the wood to swell. When the humidity is lower, the wood will transpire the moisture and shrink. This more or less constant expansion and contraction will cause fasteners and seals to loosen, which in turn allows more moisture to gain entry. The downside in this is that unless the wood is re tightened, and resealed, the situation gets worse.
Vinyl and plastics might seem to be the answer, but they tend to degrade in sunlight, and warp with changing temperatures. Many other materials are available, but most, like brick, or aluminum are costly.
Advances in plating and coating technology have made steel siding a good alternative. Galvanized steel, with zinc phosphate treatment, which is then primed and painted has a very long life, is extremely durable, and is quite attractive. Gone are the days of rust through and flaking paint. This material is usually backed up by some pretty incredible warranties.
If the material covering the outbuilding is of good quality, and the workmanship is of good quality, there should be no problem with moisture inside, and wood framing material should work very well. In fact, wood is a much stronger structural material than steel by weight, and weight is a factor when manufacturing and transporting a portable building.
Look for doors that seal properly, and that are not so heavy that they will eventually cause sagging. Look for windows that seal correctly where the surfaces mate.
Roofing materials
I have seen hundreds of storage sheds in backyards with composite shingles. I have never seen one with all the shingles in place!
Once again, galvanized and painted steel sheets provide the best protection for the longest period of time, and you won’t be out replacing them after every gale.
